Contrast: the Perfect Catalyst for Cultivating a Life of Meaning and Purpose

It is between the two poles of contrast, for instance, between light and dark, cold and hot, male and female, and good and bad, that we are able to discover meaning, and are able to drill down into deeper and deeper levels of meaning/purpose. We can find meaning and purpose by pointing our logic inwards in self-reflection and processing every subtle contrasting experience that life throws our way, which prevents us from being smacked over the head, seemingly out of nowhere, with large contrasting experiences such as a divorce, losing our job, being homeless, getting a life threatening illness, or worse.

Each experience we go through is an effect of the causes our internal state of being (the accumulation of beliefs—conscious and unconscious) creates for us to experience, and if we do not deal with them when they are small, they accumulate into much larger effects that hit us with a large impact; I guess you could say that none of us can escape our karma, it always catches up with us one way or another. The more we deal with the various contrasting poles of experience, both subtle and obvious, the more meaning and purpose we are able to develop over time, and therefore the more our psychological states “unify” within us; bringing us into psychological wholeness, inner peace, and clarity of purpose.

One might say that the meaning and purpose that is discovered by working through the dance between the light and dark poles (as well as the other dual poles available for us to dance with) is what I call “the gray”—gray/neutral mysticism.

With my being a Logocentric philosopher, somebody who focuses on deeper meaning and how we choose to approach each life experience, the following clip from Viktor Frankl, the inventor of “Logotherapy”, I can say wholeheartedly that it perfectly captures an angle of life and suffering that is too often overlooked. I highly recommend it for anybody who is attempting to make sense of their own suffering and powerlessness during this fearful time in human history.

The so-called pandemic we’re in the midst of is a giant collective wake up call for all of those who’ve turned a blind eye to their more subtle contrasting experiences and emotional upsets. It’s an opportunity to catch up on all of their missed opportunities to cultivate a life of deeper meaning and purpose. Are you heeding its call, or are you continuing to turn a blind eye to its personal message for you?

THE UNITY PROCESS: I’ve created an integrative methodology called the Unity Process, which combines the philosophy of Natural Law, the Trivium Method, Socratic Questioning, Jungian shadow work, and Meridian Tapping—into an easy to use system that allows people to process their emotional upsets, work through trauma, correct poor thinking, discover meaning, set healthy boundaries, refine their viewpoints, and to achieve a positive focus. You can give it a try by contacting me for a private session.
